Cormier signs new contract, possibly moving to 205

Strikeforce heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has signed a new contract with Zuffa.

Details of the contract were not revealed, though Cormier told MMAjunkie.com that the contract was a "shorter" one.

The heavyweight champion meets Dion Staring on January 12 at the final Strikeforce event. He was originally expected to headline the promotion's November 3 event opposite former UFC champion Frank Mir, but the longtime UFC vet was forced out due to injury.

The event was subsequently canceled.

Following Staring, Cormier's career is uncertain, aside from the likelihood that he will be strapping on UFC glove later in 2013.

However, the last Strikeforce heavyweight champion enters the same division as his friend Cain Velasquez, who fights Junior dos Santos in the main event of UFC 155 this weekend.

If Velasquez should win, changes appear to be ahead for Cormier as Velasquez says the plan is for the Strikeforce champ to cut down to 205 lbs. if the belt heads to Albuquerque.

"I'm confident that he can make (the cut to 205)," Velasquez said on a media call for UFC 155. "He's pretty confident in himself. I think that's the talk right now, him going down. I'm behind him 100% whatever he chooses to do."
