UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior Dos Santos
Dos Santos will look to submit Velasquez on the ground
Many fans and fighters alike were surprised to see Cain Velasquez completely ignore his grappling advantage in his first fight with Junior Dos Santos. Velasquez is probably well-aware of this mistake as well, and has possibly abandoned his overwhelming desire to win the heavyweight belt by knockout next week at UFC 155.
This is why it is quite likely that Cain will try to take his rematch with Dos Santos to the ground, where he will have much better chance of dominating the heavyweight champion than he would on the feet.
And according to Junior Dos Santos, he believes he can most definitely hold his own and even pull off a submission if that's the direction this upcoming fight decides to take.
Dos Santos, who holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, told MMAjunkie.com Radio that he has prepared an array of defenses to use off his back if Cain takes him down.
"Cain is a really good wrestler, and he's got a good chance to take me down. If he takes me down and holds me there, then you guys will see my Jiu-Jitsu."
Junior must be working his submission skills just as much if not more than his striking, because virtually all of Cain's victories are a result of the ferocity and control he exhibits on the ground.
"I train a lot of Jiu-Jitsu, too, and I can tell you I'm ready to submit someone. If the fight goes to the ground and I can't come back to my feet, I'm going to be looking to submit him."
Junior Dos Santos has had little if any experience fighting off his back for an extended period of time throughout his career. While this definitely makes a grappling match seem like uncharted territory for Dos Santos, it looks like his training has made up for this lack of experience as he apparently has acquired the tools to submit an aggressive wrestler like Cain Velasquez.
Still, let's hope the champion doesn't get too comfortable with the idea of Cain Velasquez assuming top position, especially early in the fight. We all saw how well Antonio Silva, who also holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, fared in that situation.
