Dos Santos fires at Alistair Overeem
UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos was in good a mood as he always is when answering questions for the media this week.
He was joined by Cain Velasquez, and the two displayed nothing but respect for one another, citing each other's strengths leading up to their UFC 155 main event title rematch. The call may not have been as entertaining as one featuring trash talkers such as Chael Sonnen, but that's just not the style of either of these heavyweights.
After all, it takes quite a lot to rattle dos Santos or Velasquez.
But when a certain heavyweight contender's name was brought up, dos Santos wasn't afraid to send a few verbal shots.
The heavyweight named, of course, was Alistair Overeem, a fighter who garners little respect from the champion, especially after a scheduled match up between the two at UFC 146 fell through when the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion failed a drug test.
In fact, the heavyweight champion dislikes Overeem so much, he even picked Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva, a heavy underdog, to defeat "The Reem" at UFC 156.
"I think 'Bigfoot' Silva's going to win," dos Santos stated on a media call this week. "He's got more technique, he's more complete than Alistair Overeem."
Dos Santos' opponent, Velasquez, was not quite so eager to select who he thought would win.
"I don't know who's going to win," the former heavyweight champion said. "I just expect a great fight."
Though Velasquez made it clear that no jabs would be made by him, apparently against any heavyweight, dos Santos was not quite finished.
"We are made in the gym," the champ said of Velasquez and himself. "Guys like the other guy (referring to Overeem) are made in a laboratory."
If Overeem should defeat Silva at UFC 156 early next year, all signs point to him fighting in the next heavyweight title contest.
However, dos Santos was hardly interested in calling the contender out. Instead, he simply stated that he would fight whoever the UFC put before him and that picking opponents is not his profession.
UFC 155 takes place December 29 in Las Vegas.
