Chandler, Curran defend titles at Bellator 85
Bellator 85 took place last evening at the Bren Events Center at University of California-Irvine, and two of the promotion's champions were featured on the first ever Bellator broadcast on SpikeTV.
Lightweight champion Michael Chandler defended his title against Rick Hawn by way of second round submission, easily putting away the challenger well before the championship rounds.
Meanwhile, in the opening bout on the SpikeTV broadcast, featherweight champion Pat Curran did see the fourth and fifth rounds in his match up against Patricky Freire.
The pair went back-and-forth for five rounds, but the champion reigned supreme with a split-decision victory in his first title defense.
Also on the main card, UFC and Strikeforce veteran Renato Sobral was upset by underdog Mikhail Zayats in the opening round. With under 20 seconds to go in the frame, Zayats landed a spinning back fist, followed with several punches to earn a stoppage victory.
Zayats advances to the next round of the Bellator light heavyweight tournament.
Meanwhile, in the final main card bout, UFC veteran Seth Petruzelli met Jacob Noe in one of the three 205 lb. tournament bouts of the evening. Like "Babalu" Sobral, Petruzelli was upset by Noe, who landed a barrage of strikes after stuffing a Petruzelli takedown in the first.
In the last of three light heavyweight opening round bouts, Emanuel Newton took out Atanas Djambazov to advance to the second round of the tournament, though he remains one of the long-shots to win the entire tournament.
