Henderson calls Sonnen bout "quite possible"
Dan Henderson and Chael Sonnen have been training at Team Quest in Oregon for many years now. They've grappled and spared with each other in what I can only imagine as hundreds of times. So now that Sonnen has moved to light-heavyweight, would their friendship stop Hendo from throwing one of his trademark H-bombs at his buddy in the octagon?
In an interview with Tatame (translated by MMAMania) Henderson elaborated on a possible fight with "The American Gangster"
"We're friends, but above all we fight now in the same category and therefore have the same goal. We both compete for the same belt."
"Our friendship is more than a title and we are professional enough to let the rivalry be just inside the Octagon. It would be a different situation, but our profession in this type of situation is quite possible to happen."
In the past Henderson has had no problem voicing his annoyance with Sonnen's immediate title shot against light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones following their coaching stints on the new season of The Ultimate Fighter. Of course, Henderson was originally scheduled to fight Jones at UFC 151, but was forced out of the title fight with a knee injury, leading to the entire event's cancellation.
A fight between teammates is a welcomed sight in the MMA world, as many fighters, such as those in the AKA camp have refused to fight one another. However a possible fight between Sonnen and Henderson pends on the their next bouts. Henderson will need to defeat former champion Lyoto Machida at UFC 157 to continue his title campaign, while Sonnen holds the incredibly challenging task of attempting to defeat one on the best in the world, Jones, on April 27.
