Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos
JDS wants his rubber match soon
It looks like Junior dos Santos doesn't want to wait long to get the heavyweight title back.
Speaking with Brazilian media (OGlobo) after UFC 155, the former champion kept it classy when speaking of Cain Velasquez and was confident on his chances of a rematch with the new champion:
“He was better and deserved the win," said JDS. "But I used the wrong strategy. I was too worried about his takedowns and didn’t protect my face, so he hit me. When the fight was on the ground, I should have used my jiu-jitsu more – I trained it so much. But I just tried to get back up and it didn’t help me. But on the ground he is very good, very strong. I didn’t really connect with any good punches. It was disappointing, because I was feeling good, had an awesome training camp, everything was right. But that’s how fighting is … I want (a rubbermatch) now, soon. I won the first one and he got a rematch. Now I lost and I want my rematch. I’m saying I want this fight. I’ll get my belt back.”
It's not far off base to say that Dos Santos could receive an immediate rematch, considering how dominant he has been in his UFC career thus far. However, as Dana White stated at the post-press conference, it is more likely he would fight once more before getting a title shot, much like Velasquez did when he fought Antonio Silva back in May.
Despite the thrashing he received from Velasquez, a third fight is bound to happen at some point in their careers, as the two are both still young and still very much on top of the division. As we have seen in the past with Liddel vs. Couture and Maynard vs. Edgar, trilogies with name value such as this market themselves and have usually proven to add an extra amount of drama to the mix.
