Souza taps Herman in round one
In the opening bout of the final main card in Strikeforce history, former middleweight champion Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza welcomed UFC veteran Ed Herman to the promotion for just one fight, a 194 lb. catchweight bout.
The contest almost immediately moved to the clinch with Souza taking control, moving the fight to the ground shortly after. Herman escaped, however, after an illegal upkick landed to Souza's head. The referee elected not to take a point away from the UFC veteran, but an irked Souza was out for revenge.
Following the restart, "Jacare" went to work with his dominant striking, controlling Herman on the feet before slamming him down to the mat, immediately taking side control. From there, Herman could do little as Souza locked on a vicious arm lock, leading to a first round submission win for the Brazilian.
Both fighters are expected to head to the UFC following tonight's event. Herman stepped up by dropping down to Strikeforce, and Souza displayed his incredible potential with a dominant win.
Likely joining them will be former top contender Tim Kennedy, who earned a preliminary card submission win tonight. He and Souza have a history as the former was outpointed by the Brazilian in 2010.
