Lamas earns second round stoppage, jumps up featherweight ladder

Erik Koch sat out all of 2012 due to an injury to Jose Aldo and then his own injury in their rescheduled bout, and the ring rust showed, though Ricardo Lamas' skill set was on display as well.

The fight began with a slow pace as Koch found himself pressed up against the cage for the majority of the opening round. Lamas didn't make any big impressions in the first five minutes, but the second round was as clear cut a round as he could have had.

Lamas attempted to work the clinch game again early, but slipped to the mat while engaging on the feet. But when Koch attempted to earn top position, Lamas reversed and found himself on top of the former top contender. From there he landed vicious shots from the top, cutting Koch open. Spurting blood, the former top contender attempted to survive, but Lamas was far too much.

Koch just never was able to find his rhythm due to Lamas' constant pressure, leading to a technical knockout stoppage halfway through the second frame.

The former top contender finds himself once again working his way toward a title shot. The past year has no doubt been extremely frustrating for Koch.

The opposite can be said about Lamas, who likely finds himself next in line for a title shot. His opponent depends on who wins next weekend at UFC 156 between featherweight champ Jose Aldo and top contender Frankie Edgar.
