Pettis willing to drop featherweight for shot at champion Aldo

Apparently Ricardo Lamas and the "Korean Zombie" Chan Sung Jung weren't the only ones keeping a close eye on Frankie Edgar vs. Jose Aldo at UFC 156.

At the the event's post-fight press conference Dana White announced that he had a received a text message from a someone telling him they wanted to fight Aldo, and they would drop from lightweight to featherweight to do it. And boy was that someone a doozy:

"Anthony Pettis texted me and he said, 'I want to go to 145 and fight Jose Aldo,'" said White. "He just texted me 10 minutes ago. He'd go down, telling me he'd go to 145."

Aldo, who was sitting next next to White upon hearing the news, offered his thoughts on the chance to fight Pettis:

"It's up to Dana, but that is an interesting fight," said the champion. "I train to fight the best and respect them all. Pettis is almost there with a title shot in his own division, but that would be an interesting fight."

Pettis is coming off a spectacular victory over "Cowboy" Donald Cerrone at UFC on FOX 6, where he won by a highlight reel liver kick KO and seemingly placed himself as next in line for the lightweight title. Of course, he would have to wait for Gilbert Melendez and Benson Henderson's bout to play out at UFC on FOX 7 in April.

If in fact "Showtime" does drop to featherweight and challenge Aldo for his title, it will no doubt leave some looming questions as to what would happen with top contenders such as Lamas, Korean Zombie, and even Cub Swanson. While those fighters have no doubt earned the right to challenge Aldo, a matching of Pettis and Aldo would be a dream bout for any fight fan who loves highlight reel knockouts, which is pretty much all of the MMA community.
