UFC heavyweight and Strikeforce Grand Prix Champion Daniel Cormier
Cormier guarantees future fight with Jones
Despite fighting in two different weight classes, Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier continue add kindling to their growing feud.
In an interview on UFC Tonight last month, after a year of listening to the former Olympian talk about his desire to fight him, Jones essentially told Cormier to put up or shut up when it came to cutting weight for a potential matchup.
However, the champion's message did not sit well with Cormier, who addressed "Bones" during his coverage of UFC 156 on Fuel TV:
"Jon Jones, you’re firing me up,” said Cormier on Fuel TV. "Where I’m from, you don’t tell a man to shut up. That’s one thing you don’t do. Jon Jones, you and I will get it done.”
The much anticipated bout between the two men is one the hinges on the hopes of several things needed to happen. First and foremost Jones will need to get by Chael Sonnen at UFC 159, and Cormier will need to defeat former heavyweight champion Frank Mir at UFC on FOX 7. Secondly, the contenders of the light-heavyweight division will need to be looked at, considering men such as Dan Henderson, Lyoto Machida, and Alexander Gustafsson having been waiting paitiently for Jones. And last but certainly most importantly, Daniel Cormier needs to cut down to 205 lbs, as Jones has stated he will not do the fight at heavyweight.
Make no mistake that these outlying factors are considerable. However, if the MMA stars are able to align at some point down the road, the bout will be a highly intriguing one considering the stylistic clash the two pose to each other.
