1) He Is A Former All-American Wrestler
If you have seen Chael Sonnen fight before, then you all ready know what his game plan is. He's on going to shoot, takedown, and unleash a barage of ground and pound. But how did Sonnen get so good with his wrestling? Well, back at the University of Oregon, Sonnen become a NCAA Division I All-American and won multiple awards in the sport including medals at the Greco-Roman World University Championships.
2) He Was Almost Professional Wrestler
Sonnen's "Superstar" Billy Graham-like promos and friendship with WWE Superstar CM Punk aren't the only connection he has to professional wrestling. Would you believe "The American Gangster" almost took his heel persona to the squared circle of WCW?
“Yeah, when I was in college, I didn’t graduate college until 2001, I became an All-American in 1998 and right after that I went out to the WCW, what they had at that time was called a Power Plant and there was a try out, it was an extremely difficult tryout, it was three days and boy it was hard, only two of us made it, me and a gentleman from Jamaica. And we got invited to comeback and I said, “Well, look, I’m going to go finish college,” and they said, “Well, you only have to do tryout, once you get invited the invite’s good for life essentially.’ So, I was going to return after I graduated in 2001, well by then they had shut down, the WCW had folded up and no longer was in existence.”
3) He Owns A Pizza Shop
If you are ever in West Linn Oregon for any reason then you need to check out Sonnen's pizza shop, Mean Street Pizza, which he co-owns. At one point they even offered the Jon Jones Special, which was of course created in light of the light-heavyweight champion's DWI and UFC 151 woes.
4) He Ran For Oregon House Of Representatives
Most politicians naturally possess the gift of the gab, so this one should really surprise no one. However, Sonnen dropped out of the race in 2010 when he found himself in a legal issue involving his real estate dealings (See #6).
5) Lance Armstrong Threatened To Sue Him
It's safe to say Chael Sonnen has made many men mad. Well, at one point in time world champion liar and bicyclist fraud Lance Armstrong happened to be one of those men when he heard several disparaging/true remarks Sonnen had made about him. In turn, Armstrong threatened to sue Sonnen for the comments, however the suit was eventually forgotten about when the West Linn native threatened to "kick his ass".
6) He Once Plead Guilty To Money Laundering
In January of 2011, Sonnen pleaded guilty to money laundering in connection to mortgage fraud after admitting he had submitted a false letter and sales agreement addendum involving a payment to a plumbing company for repairs to a home that he knew were not actually going to be made. Luckily for Sonnen, he pled down to 2 years probation and a $10,000 fine after testifying against others in the investigation.
7) He Beat Anderson Silva For 4 1/2 Rounds
Since 2006, no one has come close to beating Anderson Silva. Except Chael Sonnen, who at UFC 117, beat the hell out of the champion. For 4 1/2 rounds, Sonnen put Silva on his back and pounded on him, and lead on the scorecard for every round. And then at 3:10 in the 5th round 'The Spider" caught Sonnen in a triangle/armbar, making the challenger tap for the eighth time in his career.
8) His Mom Almost Shot Yushin Okami
Yes, you read that right. Chael's Mother almost blasted UFC middleweight Yushin Okami with a shotgun. Do yourself a favor and listen to Sonnen tell the hilarious story in this video. Skip to the 1:19 mark to hear it.
9) He Is The Best Promo Man in MMA
It doesn't matter if your name if Anderson Silva, Vitor Belfort or Jon Jones. Chael Sonnen will cut a promo on and rip you to shreds, hell he's even trash talked the entire country of Brazil. Check out this video his latest promo, where he wrote a poem for "Bones".
10) He Wrote A Book
Following in the footsteps of Forrest Griffin, Sonnen decided it was time for the best trash talker in sports to pen his own book. The Book, titled The Voice of Reason: A V.I.P. Pass to Enlightenment, features a no holds barred memoir from Sonnen that features his thoughts on the fight world and life in general.
