3) With One More Win, He Can Match Tito Ortiz
With his victories over former champions Rampage Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Rashad Evans, and Vitor Belfort, "Bones" has tied Chuck Liddell and Frank Shamrock for the second most UFC light-heavyweight title defenses(4). However, if Jones can defeat Chael Sonnen later this month, he can tie Tito Ortiz with 5.
4) His Family Is Loaded With Premier Athletes
Jones isn't the only one in his family to be able to hoist up a championship. His brother Arthur is actually a starting defensive end for the Superbowl champion Baltimore Ravens. And believe it or not, the championships may keep coming. His younger brother Chandler, another defensive end, was the first pick for the perennial playoff contender New England Patriots last year, where he posted great numbers in his rookie season.
5) Jones Is Tied For The Longest Reach In The UFC
There is perhaps no other fighter in the world who is better able to use his reach than the 6'4" Jones, who's wingspan is measured at an amazing 84.5 inches. For a perfect example of his reach being on display, look no further than than his fight with Shogun Rua. In fact the only fighter to match his reach is the 7'0'' heavyweight Stefan Struve.
6) The First MMA Fighter To Be Sponsered By Nike On A Global Scale
We've seen Yoshihiro Akiyama and Caol Uno represent Nike Japan. We've seen Anderson Silva and Junior dos Santos work with Nike Brazil. But Jon Jones is actually the first MMA fighter to represent the famous swoosh on a global scale, making him the Michael Jordan of combat sports.
7) He's Only A White Belt In Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Despite submitting BJJ black belts Lyoto Machida and Vitor Belfort, it wasn't until recently that Jones added Gi BJJ to his arsenal, as he had mostly trained in No-Gi/submission wrestling. As of now, he is training at Gracie Barra New Mexico with Roberto “Tussa”Alencar.
8) Jon Jones: The Superhero
Hours before his title fight with Shogun Rua, Jones played superhero for a few minutes when he pursued and stopped a criminal he had seen stealing from a car. For the complete recap check out what Greg Jackson had to say:
9) He Was Arrested On A DWI Charge
It's not all championship gold and applause for Jones, as he was once famously arrested on a DWI charge when he crashed his his $190,000 2012 Bentley Continental GT into a telephone pole on May 19th, 2012. TMZ had the story:
Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... Jones was involved in an accident at around 5:00 AM in Binghamton, NY. We're told the car -- which Jones crashed into a pole -- was totaled and cops arrested Jones on the scene for DUI.
According to our sources, Jones was taken into custody by Broome County Sheriff and bailed out a few hours later ... by his mom. Jones is from nearby Ithaca.
10) He Plans On Fighting At Heavyweight Sometime Soon
Becoming a legend at light-heavyweight isn't the only goal for the young champion as he had previsouly stated he intends to fight at heavyweight, even revealing that his debut in the division could come sooner than we all think:
“I have a nutritionist now so I’ve been making weight a lot easier, staying in shape when I’m off season and things like that. So I think heavyweight was going to be prolonged until 2014, maybe late this year, who knows. It definitely would be a fight for the fans and I would want to fight some one as a top contender,”
"I would love to face (Alistair Overeem). I would fight anybody, any time. I'm just a lot smaller than those guys. I know that it would be a major challenge to fight one of those guys being the size I am right now."
