Two UFC Champions Nominated for 2013 ESPY Awards
This is the third consecutive year for Jones to be nominated for the award. This is Silva’s third time to be nominated for the award, as well, having been nominated in 2009 and 2012.
In 2007, “Best Fighter” replaced the “Best Boxer” category that had been in place since 1993. An MMA fighter has never won the award since its incorporation. Only boxers have ever claimed this accolade, four times by Floyd Mayweather Jr. and twice by Manny Pacquiao .
The only ESPY to ever be won by an MMA fighter came in 2012 when Kyle Maynard, a congenital amputee, took home the award for “Best Male Athlete with a Disability.” He also won the same award in 2004 for his accomplishments as a high school wrestler, posting a career record of 35-16 and falling just short of All-American status.
Other fighters up for this year’s “Best Fighter” include three boxers in Mayweather Jr., Canelo Alvarez and Danny Garcia.
The 2013 ESPY Awards show take place July 17 and air live on ESPN from Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. Actor John Hamm will be this year’s host. Fans can cast their vote for “Best Fighter” and the rest of the 35 award categories on the official 2013 ESPY Awards website.
