Bellator 90 featured a massive upset of former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal at the hands of Emanuel Newton in the first round. The fight was part of the semi-finals for Bellator's current light heavyweight tournament. The event took place at the Maverik Center in Salt Lake City, Utah and aired live on Spike TV.
Lawal came into the bout as a heavy favorite over Newton. Although short, the fight was very telling. Lawal opend the bout content to box with his opponent. He often sported a Floyd Mayweather Jr. type of stance during the round and seemed content to counter-strike with big punches. Despite his high-level wrestling pedigree, his boxing-oriented strategy came as no surprise given his recent training with the Mayweathers, not to mention Jeff Mayweather being present in his corner. Even with noticably improved boxing skills, Lawal consistantly dropped his hands after throwing punches. Newton came in with good movement and perfectly timed the knockout spinning-backfist after missing with an overhand right.
