Ed Herman Faces Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza at Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine on Jan 12
Strikeforce officials have booked UFC fighter Ed Herman to meet Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza at 'Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine.'
Bjpenn.com reported the news early this morning.
The bout will be contested at a 194-pound catchweight. Initially, Souza was filling in for the injured middleweight champion, Luke Rockhold, against Lorenz Larkin. Now that Larkin has sustained an injury of his own, Herman has been penned as his replacement.
'Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine' takes place Jan. 12 at the Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City. The event is headlined by Nate Marquardt defending his welterweight title against Tarec Saffiedine. The main card airs on Showtime with the preliminary fights airing on Showtime Extreme. Herman vs. Souza is set for the main card.
Herman is currently an active fighter on the UFC roster. This fight will mark the first time (and only time due to Strikeforce officials recently announcing this event to be the promotion's last) a current UFC fighter has competed at a Strikeforce event. Current UFC heavyweight Frank Mir was scheduled to face Daniel Cormier in Nov., but withdrew from the bout due to injury.
Herman has been experiencing somewhat of a career revival as of late. In 2009, he suffered a knee injury and was sidelined for nearly two years. Finally healed, Herman returned to the UFC with three consecutive stoppage victories against Tim Credeur, Clifford Starks and Kyle Noke. “Short Fuse” most recently lost a unanimous decision on the judge’s scorecards to Jake Shields at UFC 150. However, Shields tested positive for a banned substance in his post-fight drug test, changing the decision to a no-contest.
Souza has looked impressive since losing his middleweight title to Rockhold in Sept. 2011. “Jacare” defeated recent TUF 16 contestant Bristol Marunde with an arm-triangle choke in March, following that up with quick 41-second knockout of Derek Brunson in August at Strikeforce: Rousey vs. Kaufman.
