Sonnen says "I don't know how to promote a fight"

Chael Sonnen, one of the biggest mouths and useful advertising tools in the history of the UFC, has claimed in an interview with FIGHT! Magazine that he doesn't know how to promote a fight.

"I'm not a promoter. I don't have a license to promote" Sonnen said when the interviewer complimented the light heavyweight title contender on his success with promoting fights. Chael might not have a degree in Public Relations, but there is no question that he took it upon himself to effectively increase the hype for his last fight with Anderson Silva. It is impossible not to remember Sonnen's comments and predictions regarding the rematch with Silva that undoubtedly garnered more spectators, as fans saw a middleweight title fight suddenly escalate into an epic grudge match between good and evil.

The latter was merely a product of the methods of promotion Chael utilized to turn himself into an arrogant, borderline-racist trash talker fans desperately wanted to get beaten into a bloody pulp by the champion.

Chael's words gained a lot of great press and public attention for that last fight. Chael Sonnen denying he's a promoter is almost on par with Dana White saying the same thing.

The interviewer was clearly showing his appreciation for Chael's outgoing advertising techniques, yet Sonnen denies the remark altogether. What could Sonnen possibly think he's doing for his upcoming fights every time he goes out of his way to boast his confidence or talk smack about his next opponent?

On the other hand, Chael Sonnen might truly want to part ways with his usual pre-fight antics and show a different side of himself now that he has changed weight classes. We'll see which Chael Sonnen we get when he coaches opposite Jon Jones on the "The Ultimate Fighter" season 17.
