"Bones" talks eventual switch to heavyweight
Since becoming the UFC light heavyweight champion at UFC 128 by decimating Mauricio " Shogun" Rua, Jon Jones has gone on to defeat four former UFC champions, all in dominant fashion. So besides his future battle with Chael Sonnen, along with possible bouts with Dan Henderson and Alexander Gustafsson, what could be next for "Bones"?
How about a move the heavyweight division?
At his Metro PCS fan chat over the weekend, Jones spoke about his eventual move to heavyweight, as well as a possible opponent, his light heavyweight title, and the advantages of being a smaller heavyweight. (via MMA Mania):
"I definitely have goals to compete at heavyweight and obviously go for the championship," Jones said in the chat last Saturday evening. "But it's a ways away. Right now I'm cutting weight more efficiently, trying to eat smarter and do things better and the weight cuts are getting easier so, heavyweight might be a ways away."
"Fighting Cain would be a great honor in the future," Jones said. "I'm here to fight the best guys and I would love to fight Cain in the future. Not because I don't like him or anything I think he's an awesome guy, but, you know, the competition. That's why I'm here. "
"When I move up to heavyweight I definitely won't be trying to hang on to two belts at the same time," he said. "I'll be focused, you know, strictly on heavyweight."
"When I compete at heavyweight I plan on weighing like 240 and I really won't want to get much bigger than that." Jones said in the chat. "I think speed and agility would give me an advantage being smaller than those guys, so."
While many are talking about a possible Anderson Silva vs. Jon Jones superfight, possible fights with Cain Velasquez and champion Junior dos Santos could have fight fans salivating over the idea of a move to heavyweight.
However, with fights with several hungry fighters in the light heavyweight division and even the idea of new prospects coming in, the move up in weight may have to wait to a 2014-2015 time frame. So, for now, it appears that fight fans will have to be patient for the impending arrival of Jon Jones the heavyweight.
