St. Pierre vs. Diaz official for UFC 158
Georges St. Pierre will officially defend his UFC welterweight title next against former Strikeforce champion Nick Diaz.
UFC officials announced the news over the weekend.
The intriguing match up will serve as the main event of UFC 158, which takes place on March 16 in Las Vegas.
"There's been a lot of talk about who I should fight next but this was really the only choice for me," St. Pierre said. "He's made it personal and personally I can't wait."
But one person in particular is sure to be unhappy with St. Pierre's next opponent. Following a vicious knockout win over Martin Kampmann at UFC 154, Johny Hendricks called out "GSP" with the hopes of earning a shot at the belt.
St. Pierre wasn't having it, however, and Dana White later revealed that his welterweight champ requested Diaz as an opponent. Seeing as St. Pierre rarely, if ever, calls out opponents, White was determined to make the fight happen.
St. Pierre addressed the media at The Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale, revealing that he believed Diaz was the opponent that fans wanted to see him fight next.
He also had a message for Hendricks, admitting to feeling bad for not giving him the fight.
