Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix Champion Daniel Cormier
According to White, Jones vs Cormier a possibility
For Daniel Cormier, one thing is for sure, following his fight with Dion Staring at Strikeforce's final event on Januray 12th, he will be on the UFC roster. However, his future doesn't appear to be at heavyweight.
The Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix champion will have some generous options as it seems that Dana White is open to him receiving an immediate title shot with either AKA teammate and new heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez or light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.
Following his post UFC 155 press conference White expressed his elation over Cormier entering the UFC ranks:
"[Cormier] is going to bring a lot of excitement to the heavyweight or light heavyweight division," White said. "And he could be next in line to fight (Jon) Jones."
White also stated his opinion on a possible fight with Velasquez:
"I have so much respect for both of those guys," White said. "They can go wherever they want. If they want to fight each other at heavy, I'm cool with that. If [Cormier] wants to go to 205, I'm cool with that. Either way."
Although he has not stated it yet, Cormier is likely to drop to 205 as teammates matching up with each other is extremely rare in MMA, especially at the AKA camp where for years Jon Fitch and then teammate Josh Koscheck refused to fight each other.
A drop to light-heavyweight is also more likely due to Cormier's stated desire to fight Jon Jones at some point in his career. At only 5-foot-11 and weighing around the 230-240 lbs area, a cut to 205 could come quicker than many expect, as he himself has proclaimed in the past.
However all of this pends on Cormier's performance against Starling on January 12th, as well as his own plans for his UFC legacy.
