Anderson Silva and Jon Jones
Sonnen on Jones: I think he's the best talent our sport has ever seen
In the past year we have see Chael Sonnen spit out some scathing promos concerning light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones. However, as we have recently seen from their TUF 17 stint and interviews, the two seem to be developing the most unlikeliest friendship in the history of MMA. And despite an upcoming title fight at UFC 159, "The American Gangster" may have just payed "Bones" the greatest compliment ever, when he declared him better than the pound-4-pound best fighter alive, Anderson Silva.
Sonnen appeared on Jay Mohr's Fox Sports Radio Show, and was asked about the difference between the two, and replied with a very surprising answer:
"I think there's a big gap between them. I think that Jon Jones is considerably better, I think he's the best talent our sport has ever seen."
"Jon comes out there with something new every time," he said. "Some trick that it appears he's making up. Stuff I've never seen."
You can file this one under the most improbable things expected to hear in MMA, as a compliment from Chael Sonnen regarding a future opponent is is extremely rare. And with all the trash talk between the two in the past, it's almost alarming to see this quick a turn around from Sonnen, who it seems like yesterday was mocking the champion over his DUI.
As for the comparison between Jones and Silva, that question remains up for debate. While the world waits for the true answer to be determined in a potential future super fight between the two, there is perhaps no man better to evaluate the skills of 'The Spider" than Sonnen, who is of course known for taking Silva to his limits in their two fights.
While we've seen Sonnen lose twice to a man he now says Jones is better than, he remains confident going into his April 27th championship bout:
"I am 100 percent offense and from the second the referee says, ‘Go.' I will. I will come across and I will bring the fight to him," Sonnen said. "I may go down, he's a good fighter I may go down, but I promise you I will go like a gangster and I will be firing the entire time."
