UFC light-heavyweight contender Alexander Gustaffson
White: This is a big fight for both of those guys
The landscape of the UFC light heavyweight championship division just became a little bit clearer, as Dana White stated that if Swedish native Alexander Gustaffson can get past Gegard Mousasi at UFC on Fuel TV 9 on April 6th, he would get a shot at the strap.
While in London today, White spoke about the upcoming main event in Stockholm:
"If Mousasi beats Gustafsson, he skyrockets right to the top of that division," White said. "And as far as Gustafsson goes, if he beats Mousasi in that fight, he's in line for a title shot.
"This is a big fight for both of those guys."
This will likely leave contenders Dan Henderson and Lyoto Machida, who fight at UFC 157, in a pickle. However, when you look at Gustaffson's record, a win over Mousasi would make it 7 straight, with two of the victories being over top-10 fighters. Hard to argue with that logic.
If Mousasi were to defeat "The Mauler" in his UFC debut, as White stated, it would certainly put him in the hunt. Yet, unlike Gustaffson it seems as though he would need at least one or two more wins to get a shot at the championship, especially when you consider the fact that most of the UFC fan base is still unaware of him.
